Somatic Sensation Map

Interoceptive Body Awareness

Overview

Based on Somatic Experiencing principles, this tool maps physical sensations in your body to develop interoceptive awareness — the ability to notice internal bodily signals — a foundation for nervous system regulation and trauma recovery.

Clinical Evidence

  • Somatic Experiencing (Peter Levine) emphasizes body awareness as essential to resolving trauma stored in the nervous system (Levine, 2010).
  • Interoception — awareness of bodily sensations — is a core mechanism of emotional regulation (Craig, 2009).
  • Polyvagal Theory (Porges, 2011) describes how mapping autonomic states through body awareness supports the "window of tolerance."
  • Body-based interventions show significant improvements in PTSD symptoms compared to talk therapy alone (Price & Hooven, 2018).
